The ceremony of international day of hematopoietic stem cell donation 2016, with cooperation of Iranian National Stem Cell Donor Network (INSCDN) and Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO), September 17, 2016, Tehran , IRAN.
The beginning of the festivities attended by officials from Iran's national stem cell donor network, including Dr. Pourfathollah (Vice president of National Council for development and monitoring HLA registry centers and umbilical cord blood banks), Dr. Hamidieh (Secretary of national council for development and monitoring HLA registry centers and umbilical cord blood banks), Dr. Nikougoftar (Responsible Secretariat of the Council) and some INSCDN officials underwriting centers in the country, Dr. Hamidieh stated a history of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in Iran and 25 years’ of experiences in this way. At first the Secretary of the INSCDN mentioned that; this treatment mainly was done from the patient’s self-stem cells and their close relatives that were a minor group of patients, but for a majority of them, about 70%, no suitable donors were found. As a result, unfortunately a number of patients of this group who waited to receive hematopoietic stem cells from unrelated donors were lost, due to lack of underwriting centers at that time. Also for these patients, there were no treatment facilities in the country and many of them were sent toabroad. With the launch of the first center in about 7 years ago, underwriting Iran's donors rushed to help their countrymen. But the number of donors in Iran, compared to the population of the country is very low, so that from about 8000 transplants during the past 25 years, the country has only 100 transplant cases with unrelated donors and other transplants had sibling or close relatives. Dr. Hamidieh wished that by strengthening the INSCDN and subscription centers across the country and also with the help of charities and fellow altruists; Iran's potential to treat diseases requiring transplantation may improve quickly.
In the following, Dr. Pourfathollah, announced that INSCDN has joined to a global network (Bone Marrow Done Worldwide (BMDW)). “We are determined to reach to more than 50,000 registered donors at the end of prudence and hope government” Pourfathollah said. He appreciated the idea of INSCDN formation and noted that: In the past, patients in need of transplants had to find a suitable donor in person to visit the country every single underwriting centers, but now by aggregating information across the country in a national network, quick online search is provided.
Following the celebration a number of stem cell donors in recent years were appreciated and awarded. Traditional music performances were performed at the end of the event.
